As "The Omu" Martha Dunkwu Reigns as Keeper of Anioma's Ancient Legacy [#TAFM24]
How Omu Martha Dunkwu upholds an 822-year-old tradition while shaping the future of women in leadership.
THE OMU is a documentary film, about 10 minutes long, directed by Chisom Ifeakandu. It was screened at The Annual Film Mischief 2024.
The British monarchy showed the world that a woman can lead a nation βpowerfully and proudlyβ but for the Anioma people of Delta State, Nigeria, this concept is far from new.
The Omu tells the remarkable story of Her Royal Majesty, Obi Martha Dunkwu, the reigning Omu of the Anioma people. The Omu, or "Queen Mother," is an ancient role that dates back over 822 years, long before colonial rule diminished its significance. As the Omu, she holds multiple roles β spiritual guide, leader of women, custodian of the market, and traditional ruler. Despite its challenges, this institution continues to be a vital force in maintaining the unity of the Anioma community.
Obi Martha Dunkwu lived in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria 38 years ago. Before her enthronement, she had a thriving career as a media consultant for several traditional rulers. However, her life took a more spiritual turn over 20 years ago when the elders, after consulting with the ancestors, revealed her as the next Omu of her community. Unlike many leadership positions, the role of Omu cannot be campaigned for or won through elections. It is a calling from the ancestors, not a position sought after. Reflecting on her previous life, Martha remarks that she lived fully before becoming the Omu and misses nothing about her pre-enthronement way of life.
Her coronation was a transformative experience that bestowed upon her several male rites, including wearing the symbolic red cap, breaking of kola nut, and carrying the elephant tusk, to mention but a few. These rites symbolized her elevation to a new status, essentially being regarded as a man in her society.
The power and isolation of her role weigh heavily on her. As the Omu, she experiences a separation from those who either cannot keep up with her responsibilities or fear the mantle she bears. However, she remains steadfast in her belief that this path was chosen for her by the gods. She represents the interests of the women in her community, protecting their rights and acting as their mother and guide.
Her duties are largely spiritual β 70% of her work, as she describes it, is maintaining the sacred bond between the gods and the people. The rest is divided among looking after the women (10%), overseeing the markets (10%), and settling disputes (10%). A prime example of her influence is when she intervened in a land boundary dispute that left the men frustrated. With her wisdom and authority, she was able to resolve the conflict, proving the value of her leadership.
The Omuβs position is grounded in her faith that the gods called her to this role, and she continues to defy her detractors. Many doubted she would last nine months on the throne, yet over two decades later, she remains a powerful force, amplifying the voice of an 822-year-old institution that is now gaining recognition beyond Aniomaβs borders.
In a world that continues to grapple with the inclusion of women in leadership, Omu Martha Dunkwuβs story is a powerful reminder that women have long held roles of influence and authority. She is a trailblazer, a custodian of tradition, and a beacon of hope for future generations of women in her community. Her leadership signals that the future is bright β and that the Omu institution will continue to thrive under her reign.
May her soul rest in peace.
